This survey explores whether social media users prefer non-domestic apps over domestic alternatives due to sociopolitical motivations, cultural curiosity, and resistance to government interference.
We take the recent threat of a TikTok ban in the U.S. as an example, during which approximately over 3.4 million U.S. users switched to the Chinese app RedNote (also known as Xiaohongshu).
For those, participating the survey, who did not switch to rednote during the TikTok ban phase, please assume that your favorite social media platform is a non-domestic app and being banned by your government under the pretext of being a threat to national security & data security.
π For smartphone users, please zoom out or hold your phone sideways to better read some of the questions.
