Survey on Motivations and Barriers for the Provision of Multiple Ecosystem Services

The survey is part of the HORIZON project Small4Good, funded by the European Union, and targeted at small forest owners of five European countries. By responding to the survey, participants can support the research project and thereby contribute to the development of multifunctional management and business models for owners of small forests and related support schemes such as Payment for Ecosystem Services and digital AI-based solutions.

The relevance of the project originates from the fact that about 60% of the European forest cover is privately owned, with a significant share of very small holdings. Small forest owners thus can significantly contribute to safeguarding biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem services. The survey presented here aims to investigate the motivations of small forest owners concerning the management of their forests. How are small forest patches managed? Why, or why not, are certain management techniques applied? Which values are management decisions based on? These and many more questions are in the center of our investigation.

We would like to emphasize that we encourage all forest owners to participate in this questionnaire, independent of for example (prior) knowledge or level of activeness. Responding to the survey takes up to 20 minutes, and should be completed by 31.01.2025. The survey data is anonymized and handled confidentially.
